2015 has been a great year especially
for movie aficionado. A total number of 202 Tamil movies were released up to
December 25, the last Friday of the year. Good movies were much-admired and bad
movies were criticized, irrespective of their banner, star-cast and of course
the budget.
Here is the list of 10 movies of the
2015 that have been highly-praised and made a mark in Kollywood.
36 Vayadhinile
This marks the return of the much-famed
actor Jyothika in a women-centric avatar. 36 Vayadhinile is all about women empowerment
and environmental sensibility. Jyothika’s performance has been widely recognized
and appreciated.
Bahubali
This is one such intensely hyped movie
of 2015. Bahubali is just another commercial entertainer made in humongous
budget. The reason why I quoted this movie in my list is because this movie
made strong impact both locally as well as globally. It features some of the outstanding
shots ever made in Indian Cinema. With its sequel releasing this year, viewers
are gearing up to know why Kattappa killed Bahubali.
Indru Netru Nalai
The concept of time travel, famous among Hollywood
film makers, has been introduced for the first time in Kollywood and has been
well received by the viewers. R. Ravikumar (Writer & Director) has made a
fitting debut weaving this novel tale.
Papanasam
Papanasam is a remake of the yesteryear
blockbuster Mollywood movie Dhrishyam, featuring Mohanlal as a lead. Initially,
Jeethu Joseph (Director) approached Rajnikanth for this movie, which didn’t
work out. Trust me, Papanasan wouldn’t have come up this way featuring
Rajnikanth in lead. It is because of Kamalhassan and his casual approach to the
script that made this movie charming.
Kaaka Muttai
Kakka Muttai (Crow’s Egg) is a light
hearted, enjoyable experience, one should never miss. It is one such movie that
will make you feel and experience the beauty of the slum with utmost passion. There are some awe-inspiring performances that would
fascinate you on the due course of the movie.

OK Kanmani
Veteran film maker Mani Ratnam has made
a fitting comeback making a movie in a genre he is well-known for – Romance. OK
Kanmani is an ordinary and usual light-hearted, romantic movie, which was made
an extraordinary movie because of two things, its exceptional music by AR Rahman
and an inventive cinematography by PC Sriram.

Naanum Rowdy Than
Vijay Sethupathi, known for his body
language and express-paced dialogue delivery, has rocked yet again in this
rom-com Naanum Rowdy than (NRT). Vignesh Shivan, who had a disastrous start
with Podaa Podi, has come up with an
interesting and entertaining movie that is free of flaws.

Rajathanthiram
This is one of the best narratives,
featured last year. Amid (Writer & Director) certainly falls on the list of
modern age film maker alongside Karthik Subburaj, Nalan Kumarasamy and Pa.
Ranjith. Film making is all about experimentation and testing patterns, that’s
what Amid has worked out here with the narration part that is intriguing as
well as puzzling.
Uttama Villain
Uttama Villain is a classic addition to
Tamil cinema with a substantial and comprehensive plot well supported by the
subplots. It has some amazing star cast with remarkable performances. It is a
kind of movie that induces you to think and comprehend every scene and
dialogues and as well relate with our real life experiences.
Thani Oruvan
Thani Oruvan is an elegant cop movie
with ample twist and turns to keep you captivated. Raja has worked very well on
the script and I particularly like his to-the-point approach. Arvind Swamy has
made a terrific comeback as a charming yet suave villain. This movie is going
to be remade in almost five languages, a phenomenal deed by any Tamil movie.
p.s. this list is completely based on
what I have seen last year. I have missed quite a few in the list that is
because I haven’t seen them. May be you can enlighten the list adding some
noteworthy movies released last year.

DeleteIn 1897, R.Hariharan, cheyyar first screened a selection of silent short films at the Victoria Public Hall in Madras. The films all featured non-fictional subjects; they were mostly photographed records of day-to-day events. The film scholar Stephen Hughs points out that within a few years there were regular ticketed shows in a hall in Pophams Broadway, started by one Mrs. Klug, but this lasted only for a few months. Once it was demonstrated as a commercial proposition, a Western entrepreneur, Warwick Major, built the first cinema theatre, the Electric Theatre, which still stands. It was a favourite haunt of the British community in Madras. The theatre was shut down after a few years.
