The Heritage City as they call, Srirangapatna at Karnataka should easily fall into your list of places to visit when you plan a trip to Mysore. Srirangapatna is approximately at a distance of 19 KM from Mysore city. And here are more details about the road trip to Mysore.

For our first day of sightseeing, we planned to cover the places in and around Srirangapatna and Brindavan Garden. There is a good number of tourist spots so start your day early so you visit all the places. Also, with some search online you can know the timings of the place and plan you're itinerary accordingly. Here are the places in and around Srirangapatna that are listed in the order we visited (pretty much our itinerary):

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary: Birdwatcher or not, nature lover or not, this place will remain a favourite. The nesting ground resting on the banks of river Cauvery gives a visual treat and take a boat ride to see the birds a little closer. Also, if you are lucky then you can spot otter and marsh crocodiles. For more details on the bird sanctuary, click here.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple: One of the tourist places that you can spot without any guidance with the majestic and beautiful temple gopuram. With Lord Vishnu as the main deity of the temple, the temple owns alluring structure and carvings.

Lal Mahal Palace, the remains of Tipu’s Fort, Tipu’s death place, Colonel Bailey’s Dungeon: All these places are located at a walkable distance from each other and the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. Among these places, the must visit is Colonel Bailey’s Dungeon as the site is well-maintained. There are a few remains of the Lal Mahal Palace and Tipu’s Fort, the water gate, Thomas Inman’s Dungeon and Tipu’s death place, which are the other places you can check out whereas they aren’t maintained properly so finding them would be a tough task. But just take a walk around the small town and you shall spot all these places, or you can go for guides you charge around Rs.125-150 INR to take you around the city of Srirangapatna.

Tipu’s Summer Palace / Daria Daulat Bagh: Words wouldn’t really explain the mesmerising Indo Saracenic style of architecture of the palace and the vast garden. We were spellbound seeing the fascinating painting or sketches of the Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali’s war scenario and all the prominent personalities. Also, the belongings of Hyder Ali, Tipu like the crown, clothes, silver vessels, coins, war weapons, etc., have been showcased. They charge an entry fee of Rs.15 INR per person for Indians (and foreign tourists Rs.200 INR) and timings are 8.30 AM - 5.30 PM all day a week.

Gumbaz: The tombs of Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali is a historically important site. The alluring architecture and beautiful garden captivates everyone; the tombs were built by Tipu Sultan for his parents, Hyder Ali and Fathima Begum during 1784 AD, which is known as Gumbaz. Later, Tipu Sultan was buried here and tombs of other Tipu’s relatives and nobles surround the Gumbaz.

Sangam: It is the confluence of three rivers, Cauvery, Lokapavani and Hemavati. Tourists majorly visit the place to take a dip in the water with the belief to wash off their sins. There is a parking charge of Rs.50 INR collected for the vehicle.
Brindavan Gardens: An ideal spot to end your hectic trip around the city of Srirangapatna. One of the best maintained gardens and most frequented tourist spot when you visit Mysore. The ideal time to visit would be around 4-5 PM, as you can have a glimpse of the garden in daylight and at night. The evening lighting of the Brindavan garden is a mesmerising sight that you don’t want to miss. The terrace garden built near the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) dam will attract every visitor. An entrance fee of Rs.20 INR per person and Rs.50 INR for the camera is charged (also, they charge Rs.30 INR for the vehicle).

Brindavan Garden is lit as the Sun starts to set!
The places in and around Srirangapatna and Brindavan Gardens are must visit when you plan a trip to Mysore. A tiring day but the city will embrace you with history, elegance and memories.
