Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum - Movie Review

I have been waiting for Nalan’s next movie for a while and as soon as I saw the trailer, I decided to watch this movie. Nalan Kumarasamy is known for his debut movie Soothu Kavvum, an innovative black comedy that was not only a smash hit but also received quite a mention among movie critics. It was also landmark film for Vijay Sethupathi, who was appreciated across the industry for his performance.

KaKaPo Movie Review
KaKaPo Movie Review - Creatikaa
Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum (KaKaPo), romantic comedy, is an official remake of the Korean movie ‘My dear Desperado.’ It is a subtle and sweet romantic tale which Tamil cinema has never experienced so far. Nalan has that remarkable touch of converting even a simplest of plot into an astonishing tale. Even though he has only one feature film to his credits, delightful touch in handling plots is noteworthy.

Alright, let’s get set off. This review is all about story, screenplay, music and performance.

What makes you stay seated?

For Tamil cinema rom-com means love-at-first-sight, one-side-love, triangular love story, some usual-romance and stuff but KaKaPo is none of the above. The story of KaKaPo is eccentric in its plot, subtle in romance and charming in humor and emotion. Yazhini after losing her IT job is forced to vacate her posh apartment and move into a housing-board flat. Living aside her flat is a rowdy named Kathir. Both have their own goals in life; Yazhini wants a good job whereas Kathir wants to be a bar owner. Gradually they both get closer and become friends, weird friends to be specific. Whether this friendship goes on to the next level is what makes the clock ticking.

Vijay Sethupathi is known for his distinctive approach with the characters. His emotion and expression is well-balanced along with his witty one-liners. Madonna Sebastian, who created waves among the youth due to Mollywood’s yesteryear blockbuster Premam, made a dream debut in Kollywood. She conveyed her desperation of getting a job delicately with a charm. Samuthirakani is strong and impactful. All other played their part neatly to their level best.

Music by Santhosh Narayanan goes well with the plot adding value to the visuals. Nalan Kumarasamy, Karthik Subburaj and Pa. Ranjith mastered the art of efficient usage of music to the script. As the matter of fact, these guys rely on Santhosh and his magical numbers that not only is hummable and soothing to ears but also compliments and enhances the visuals.
Screenplay is simple, to-the-point and subtle. Nalan has that ability to take an ordinary movie into an extraordinary one. Yazhini and Kathir never indulge into some kind of romantic conversation, neither do they get physical, yet you will smell something strange happening around them. That’s the beauty of this movie. Cinematography is another pleasant thing as the setting is perfectly captured with the characters.

What would have been better?

Why same role again Vijay Sethupathi? We have seen you in this attire in quite a few movies and we know you can impress still why? He is at his usual best but it’s really unexciting to see him in the same looks and outfit again and again.

The movie is lengthy and lack in pace. The scene by scene transition would have been better as it wasn’t smooth enough to keep up the pace. The sub-plots like Yazhini’s interview and Kathir’s dream didn’t quite go well. It would have been better if the focus is more on the lead pair and their connection.

I never felt anything when Yazhini was humiliated in interview but I felt something when she says don’t make me change my decision followed by the hug which came from nowhere, sitting along the steps of temple pond. I also didn’t like the way it ended. When Bruce Waine came back from dead in The Dark Knight raises, it was really something and the emotional quotient was far above the ground but here it’s just an opposite. So if you (all the directors) really want your Hero to be resurrected, don’t just bring him alone, bring emotion along with him.

You will enjoy KaKaPo but not the way you enjoyed Soothu Kavvum. The latter will make you laugh and applaud once in every 10 minutes whereas the former wont.

Bottomline

Just go with a relaxed, laid-back mindset, KaKaPo will bring in smile across your face.

My Rating

Story - 3.5 / 5
Screenplay - 3 / 5
Music - 4 / 5
Performance - 4 / 5
